Police: Woman gives birth at Florida rest stop, leaves baby behind
MARION COUNTY, Fla. (WPEC/AP) —
Travelers on I-75 in Marion County got the surprise of their lives when they found a newborn infant abandoned at a rest stop.
A couple traveling along the highway called 911 shortly after discovering the child on the bathroom floor. The couple's timing was critical for saving the baby boy's life.
"It could have been horrible," said Lt. Todd Spicer or the Marion County Sheriff's Office, "It was cold, it was damp. It's on a cement floor - there's no telling how long he could have made it. Thank God for those folks."
The Marion County Sheriff's office is searching for the infant's mother, who police say delivered the baby and then simply left the scene. If you have any information that could help locate her, you're asked to contact you local sheriff's office or CrimeStoppers.
