New DVD and Blu-ray Releases for June 24, 2014
(KUTV) This week's  releases from films recently in theaters is headlined by 300: Rise of an Empire, which serves as a prequel and sequel to 2007's 300 as it expands upon the original film's narrative by focusing on the events that led to the rise of Xerxes (with Rodrigo Santoro reprising the role) and the disastrous events that followed. The film also stars Eva Green, Game of Thrones' Lena Headey and Sulivan Stapleton and while it didn't quite match the box office success of its predecessor it did manage to make a healthy profit.

The same cannot be said about Winter's Tale, Akiva Goldsman's adaptation of Mark Helprin's supernatural novel. Having not read the novel I can only say that the film is a narrative mess that takes place during various time periods starting in 1895 and finishing up in present day. What was apparently intended to be a story about the endurance of spirit, soul and character is more of a test of patience.

Independent films seeing release this week include  Enemy, starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a man who becomes obsessed with an actor who looks exactly as he does, Blood Ties, the English-language remake of the French thriller Les liens du sang starring Clive Owen, Billy Crudup, Marion Cotillard and Mila Kunis, the found footage thriller The Jungle, a movie about a pair of documentary filmmakers who find themselves stalked by a mysterious predator while filming in the Indonesian jungle and The Chef, the Actor, the Scoundrel, a Chinese action comedy packed with effective twists.

This week also sees the long awaited Blu-ray release of The Beatles film A Hard Day's Night as part of The Criterion Collection (the film was released by Criterion on laserdisc two decades ago).

Also this week is a massive unloading of television series titles that includes Duck Dynasty: Season 5, Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season 6, Mama's Family: Complete Fourth Season, Witches of East End: Complete First Season, NYPD Blue: Season 6, Masters of Sex: Season One, Lost Girl: Season as well as The Boondocks: Season 4 and The Boondocks: The Complete Series.
