Utah Post Game Reaction After 38-28 Loss To USC
(KUTV) Utah dropped to 0-2 in Pac-12 play after No. 13 USC rallied for a 38-28 win at Rice-Eccles Stadium Thursday night.
Utah (2-3) came out of the gate quickly, when Nate Fakahafua scooped up a Matt Barkley fumble and scampered for an 8-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.
Moments later Utah cashed in on another Southern Cal turnover when Barkley couldn't handle the snap from center. Quarterback Jon Hayes hit Kenneth Scott for a touchdown in the corner of the end zone to give Utah a 14-0 lead.
But Barkley and the rest of the USC offense was able to regroup and outscore the Utes 31-14 to improve to 4-1 on the season and 2-1 in conference play.
Utah quarterback Jon Hayes threw a pick six midway through the 4th quarter to give the Trojans a 38-21 lead and seal the victory.
Still, Barkley was the story of the game. He threw for 303 yards and three touchdowns in the comeback win. The most damaging score came early in the 4th quarter, when the Heisman Trophy candidate hit Marquis Lee (12 catches, 192 yards) for an 83-yard touchdown strike. Lee promptly split the defense and sprinted to pay dirt for a 31-21 Southern Cal lead.
The Utes were plagued by penalties and turnovers for most of the game.
Late in the second quarter,Utah could have taken the lead back when Hayes found Scott in the end zone--who made a circus grab--but the play was called back when a Utah lineman was down field blocking.
