(KUTV) Nurse Dani with Intermountain Moms talked about the benefits of breastfeeding for mothers.
Many mothers choose to breastfeed their babies knowing that breast milk is healthiest for babies, but there are so many benefits for mothers too!
What health benefits are there for mothers who breastfeed?
- Mothers who breastfeed recover faster from delivery. The hormone that causes letdown is oxytocin, which is the same hormone that causes contractions during labor. So, when you breast feed, you actually have contractions that help your uterus get back to its pre-pregnant size and control postpartum bleeding.
- Added health benefits for mothers who nurse include decreased risk for ovarian and breast cancer later in life, and reduced chances of developing other serious health conditions like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, as well as rheumatoid arthritis.
What are other reasons a mother should choose breast feeding?
- Breast feeding is also convenient. It comes out ready to eat at just the right temperature. You don't have to clean bottles, and it saves a ton of money! The going rate for formula right now is about 10 cents per ounce (depending on the brand and type, it can be slightly less or more), and over the first year, this will run you over $1,000!
- One of the biggest and most important benefits for moms is bonding. Hormones are released during breastfeeding that make you feel relaxed, at peace, and help you focus on your baby. Breastfeeding is the one thing that only a mother can do for her baby and it brings with it a sense of fulfillment and joy.
