Baby Your Baby - Hypno Birthing

(KUTV) One of the items on an expecting mother's to-do list involves creating a birth plan. Part of that plan is deciding whether or not she wants a HypnoBirth, and if so, attending a class. Marie Chase, HypnoBirthing Teacher at Intermountain's McKay-Dee Hospital, stopped by KUTV to educate moms about HypnoBirthing.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is often misunderstood. It is a word that refers to the natural relaxation process everyone passes through each day. For example, the “relax and let go” state one feels before going to sleep or the peaceful feeling experienced while sitting on the beach watching the waves roll in. This level of relaxation allows the body to function at its optimum efficiency and health by off setting the natural stresses we experience throughout our day.

All hypnosis is self hypnosis so during HypnoBirthing® classes couples learn self hypnosis techniques. Practicing these techniques regularly supports the expecting woman through pregnancy and the birth process.

What is HypnoBirthing®?

HypnoBirthing® is a childbirth education program that focuses on preparing parents for a calm, gentle birth experience. The belief that childbirth is dangerous and extremely painful is deeply imbedded in our culture. Fear creates tension in the body; a defensive state, fight or flight state keeps a woman’s body from being able to let go and give birth easily. In HypnoBirthing® classes this fear is dispelled through educating couples about the normal, physiologic process of birth.

Couples learn how the mind impacts the body’s ability to relax and give birth. They also learn techniques to reinforce a positive belief that birth is a healthy, safe and comfortable process

In HypnoBirthing® classes, couples learn proven techniques of deep relaxation, visualization, and self-hypnosis. HypnoBirthing® encourages a calm, peaceful, and natural pregnancy, birth, and bonding experience for families.

Will HypnoBirthing® be useful to me if I don't opt for a natural childbirth or if circumstances necessitate medical interventions or a surgical birth?

All skills learned in HypnoBirthing® will benefit every couple, no matter what type of birth they have. Maintaining a calm, relaxed state physically and emotionally is always supportive of both mother and baby. HypnoBirting® techniques are very supportive of the natural birth process, but may be even more needed in the event that medical interventions are part of the birth experience. Because they are accustomed to working together as a team, couples will be better prepared to remain calm and in control during any turn of events.

Mothers, who have had a surgical birth, report that they were totally relaxed before, during and after the procedure. Many of these mothers report less need for pain medications after surgery and a shorter recovery time.
