Check Your Health - National family caregiver month

(KUTV)-Thank family and other non-paid caregivers for serving their families and friends. It is important enough, that every U.S. President since 2000 has written a National Family Caregiver Proclamation.

Kathy Nelson, Training Specialist, Salt Lake County Aging & Adult Services, explains the need for caregivers to maintain their health and energy.

Three tips to maintain healthy care boundaries:

1.It is unsafe/unhealthy to provide care alone—we all need to reach out for help. Mention eldercare.acl.gov and utah211.org.

2.Plan daily time out moments to stay healthy

3.Learn all the knowledge and skills you can about providing care for others:

  • The “Managing Care Guide” can be found here. The guide is now available in Spanish--available on the website soon.
  • Stress-Busting for Family Caregivers Participant guide
  • Education is specific to county of care (check in with your county).
