Orem, Utah — Diagnosed with breast cancer and don't know where to turn to next? There's a group of loving women out there that can help.
Kara Herron, Bethanie Newby and Colette Harris are breast cancer survivors. But during treatment they realized there wasn't a strong support system available to answer their questions.
Questions like "Do you have this side effect from Chemo?" asks Bethanie. "Is it normal to not remember anybody's name?"
These three friends decided to found their own breast cancer support group called Lifting Hearts. It is the largest support group of its kind in Utah and touts 400 members.
"Because we are survivors too, we can really empathize with these ladies," says Kara. "We don't sympathize with them, we empathize with them."
Now, every month, Lifting Hearts gathers at the Orem Senior Friendship Center to provide loving care and support. Twice a year the organization provides retreats to Heber where breast cancer patients can get away from their treatments and build their souls for the future."We wanted to make sure that Lifting Hearts was a soft place to land and they could receive love and support," says Colette.
All services provided by Lifting Hearts are free and their success is thanks to donations. That's why Lifting Hearts is this week's Mountain America Credit Union's Pay It Forward recipient.
