(KUTV) David Howard wrote and co-directed the film, "Trek: The Movie," which depicts the pioneer treks many LDS youth participate in.

Howard has never been on a trek, but his children have.

"There's a lot of information out there, so we did a lot of research and talked to a lot of people," Howard said of the process to come up with the plot of the movie.

Howard was approached by a friend to write "Trek."

His friend had worked with John Hughes, and wanted to come up with a Hughes-like film in a Mormon context.

"Trek" premiered last week, and it was exciting for Howard to see all the pieces to come together.

"It was really fun," he said.

"Trek: The Movie" is now in theaters.
