(KUTV) As with any job, being an athletic director for a university can have its challenges.

"When you do have almost 500 athletes, things come up," Mark Harlan said. "We were all young people once and we remember the decisions that we make. But I've been so far impressed with the maturity of our folks and the way our students handle themselves."

In dealing with student athletes and anything that comes up, Harlan has the example of previous mentors to help him.

Harlan learned a lot from former University of Arizona football coach, Dick Tomey, who taught him "to be tough, but to hug, too."

Harlan plans to use that not only with athletes, but with coaches and staff as well.
