(KUTV) Being on the University of Utah gymnastics team has always been a goal for MyKayla Skinner.

She committed to the school pretty early.

"They were starting to look at me when I was 12," she said.

She verbally committed to the U her freshman year of high school.

When she went to the Olympics as an elite athlete, some coaches were nervous she'd skip the college route and just go pro.

"I knew that I needed to go to college and get my degree, so this is where I wanted to be," she said.

Skinner explained that it's typical for the recruitment process to start when gymnasts are pretty young.

"It's crazy because how do you know about college at that age?" she said.

But she didn't have to face the pressure of making a big decision between colleges, because she had always wanted to go to the U.

"Utah was just a goal for me, and I really didn't think about it much," she said. "You really don't know at that age, so it's hard to know where you want to go and where you want to be."

To young aspiring gymnasts, she suggests being patient and taking time to make their choice.

"It is a big decision of your life," she said.
