A Canadian couple who cleaned out an entire grocery store of its meat section says they're now getting death threats, according to Castanet.

Lake County, British Colombia residents Dan Marcotte and his girlfriend were caught on camera last week with what appears to be two shopping carts full of goods -- mostly meat -- at Save On Foods.

Witnesses told local news that the couple bragged about "cleaning house" so there was nothing left for anyone else -- all while laughing about whether they could afford it all.

One witness said Marcotte and his girlfriend ran in front of other customers, cutting them off to "ensure they would get every item."

Taylor Born, another witness, said:

They proceeded to brag to everyone at the till that they 'cleaned house' and 'there’s nothing left for anyone to get'... and laughed about 'hoping they could pay for it all. I felt SO sorry for the poor staff, they looked just as disgusted as every customer in the store. I am appalled at our society, this is ridiculous!!

No, Marcotte says he and his girlfriend are getting negative reactions from the community which includes death threats.

Marcotte told Castanet:

Everybody knows who I am, because I put myself out there, (now) I'm getting death threats and I don't answer the phone so I'm losing business. My own mother is ashamed of me.

Marcotte says he has a big heart and that he has used his moving company to help others in the past, including giving his services away for free during the 2017 and 2018 wildfire seasons. Marcotte says:

Nobody remembers that now. If me and my girlfriend had done this two months ago nobody would say a bloody word. We're getting crucified for buying two carts of meat. We might have gone overboard, but we didn't push people or laugh at anyone. I'm not feeling safe, and me and my girlfriend are scared.

It was all a part of his anxiety about the coronavirus, Marcotte says. He made the purchase solely for his family.
