'Stranger Things' actor uses his success to bring awareness to rare disease
(KUTV) -- It has been a long time coming but the big day is almost here! The highly-anticipated second series of “Stranger Things” starts streaming Friday on Netflix.
Now, one of the stars of the show is using his success to help people right here in Utah.
Gaten Matarazzo, who plays “Dustin” on the show, has cleidocranial dysplasia, otherwise known as CCD. It’s so rare that it’s believed only 9 people in the state of Utah have it too.
The condition affects bones and teeth primarily. He tells us that while the writers of the show embraced his disability, it initially hindered his ability to get acting roles. Matarazzo says he appreciates the platform he has now to educate others about CCD.
That’s why he is teaming up with newly-formed, non-profit “CCD Smiles”. It’s based in Orem and its’ goal is to help guide and connect people who have the disorder.
