10-year-old dies in apparent diving accident at Blue Lake
(KUTV) — A 10-year-old boy died on Wednesday while scuba diving with his father at Blue Lake.
Police say the boy was in the lake with his dive-certified father. The boy was breathing from a spare line connected to his father's scuba tank.
For reasons police have not yet been able to determine, the boy disconnected from the line and "quickly" ascended to the lake's surface, said Lieutenant Ryan Johnson with the Tooele County Sheriff's Office.
At the surface, the boy was pulled from the water, at which point he suffered a medical emergency, Johnson said. He was transported across the Utah-Nevada state line, but died as rescuers were attempting to save his life.
Police have not yet been able to determine a cause of death, but Johnson said he would call the incident a "dive-related accident." It's possibly the boy simply ascended to the lake's surface too quickly, he said.
Johnson said police plan to thoroughly check the scuba equipment to determine whether an equipment malfunction could have prompted the boy's quick ascension.
