(KUTV) — A touching tribute that has become a tradition in Sandy, Utah, is celebrating its 16th anniversary in commemorating the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centers.

The Healing Field by the Colonial Flag Foundation is a display of more than 3,000 American flags—one for each victim.

It also honors first responders and those who have died from efforts during the aftermath that exposed them to toxins and cancer-causing agents.

Volunteers set-up the flags Sunday on three acres south of Sandy City Hall.

Retired FBI Special Agent Scott Montefusco noted the 15 additional flags this year that honor agents who lost their lives from after-effects of exposure from the debris.

"The folks like us that lived through it, it was real for us on that day," Montefusco said. "And we lose track of that fact that the many young people that were too young to remember that incident and how America changed that day, and it's events like this that is a chance to educate the young on what happened that day."
