(KUTV) An overnight fire in Sandy resulted in millions of dollars in damage to a government building and multiple snow plows.
The four-alarm fire broke out just before mid-night Friday morning at the city public works building near 8775 S. 700 W. Sandy's public works director believes the fire started near the center of the maintenance garage near the snowplows. According Fire Chief Bruce Cline, there were no sprinklers in the 40-year-old building, but the fire alarm did go off.
"We aren't sure if that would have helped," said Sandy Fire Chief Bruce Cline. "But they're always good to have."
Fire officials from seven departments in the valley responded to the fire that destroyed 50 percent of the building and 10-12 snowplows.
Deputy Derek Maxfield, the fire chief for Sandy, said they estimate $5-million of damage.
He says they contained the fire quickly as to prevent the flames from spreading to the other half of the building where office spaces are located.
The city is left with about seven snowplows. They hope to get help from other cities with clearing the streets the rest of the winter.
Fire crews expect to stay on scene for a few days. Deputy Maxfield says it's too soon to tell how it happened.
