(KUTV) -- Police say a 9-month-old baby is dead and a 2-year old is in critical condition after collision in Herriman caused by a reckless driver.
In addition to the children, five adults were injured. Two of the adults are in serious condition and three are in critical condition, said Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera .
"The impact was horrific, and it’s going to take some time to get the road open.” Rivera said.
Three medical helicopters responded to the scene at approximately 7:30p.m. near Mountain View Corridor and Rosecrest Road.
Pictures from the scene show the medical helicopters landed on Mountain View Corridor as police closed the area to vehicle traffic.
“We have responded to this area before and we have done some traffic control here before," Rivera said.
The alleged reckless driver went through the intersection at high rate of speed, hitting two vehicles - one traveling eastbound and one traveling westbound.
A green truck was involved in the collision and so was a minivan. The third vehicle has not been identified.
“We do know that the green truck was the vehicle that was travelling at a high rate of speed and had an impact with the two vehicles who were travelling east and west," said Rivera.
The green truck has been reported to dispatch of driving recklessly approximately two minutes prior to the deadly crash.
The parents of the two children, the baby who died and the toddler, who were in the minivan have been hospitalized. The driver accused of reckless driving is also hospitalized in critical condition.
