UPDATE: Donna Clegg, 47, has been identified as the woman who died in the fire. The cause of the fire continues to be under investigation.

(KUTV) — One person is dead after Provo fire crews responded to a house fire at 1440 South State Street early Friday morning.

A man had tried to rescue the woman. He was thought to have suffered smoke inhalation as a result of the attempted rescue, but refused transport to a local hospital.

"He is pretty devastated," said Captain Dean York with Provo Fire & Rescue.

"We had two occupants in the home. One was able to make it out," York said. "An adult female and possibly her pet was not able to make it out."

It is unknown at this time whether there were fire alarms in the home.

Fire crews are trying to preserve evidence at the scene, although the fire is not being treated with suspicion at this time.

Southbound State Street was closed between 1400 South and 1600 South.

2News will continue to update this story as new information becomes available.
