(KUTV) A Good Samaritan is being credited for saving a woman's life when her house caught fire in the early hours Tuesday morning.

Fire crews responded to 4020 West Dennis Drive in West Valley around 5:15 a.m. When they arrived, the garage was fully engulfed and flames were shooting through the roof.

According to the WVC Batallion Chief, as newspaper delivery man saw the fire from the road and ran up to save anyone inside. A woman, who lived alone, was asleep and got out safely.

2News spoke with Matthew Hoagland, who has delivered the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune for several years.

Hoagland said it was as scary as one would imagine.

The fire destroyed the garage and a car parked inside, officials said. The interior of the home has smoke damage.

Neighbors, who witnessed the fire, say they heard loud banging noises and could feel the heat from their front porch.

Crews told 2News, they believe the fire started in the garage. They have not determined a cause. Damages are estimated at $150,000.
