(KUTV) — At least seven people have nowhere to live after a house fire in Salt Lake City displaced them early Saturday morning.
At approximately 3:45 a.m., firefighters responded to a call that indicated people were possibly trapped in a multiple-unit house near 60 South 800 West.
Once on scene, fire crews found smoke and flames coming from a laundry room at the back of the house, and safely removed everyone from the building.
Capt. Cary Turner with the Salt Lake City Fire Department told 2News about the importance of smoke alarms to detect overnight fires.
"It's very important to make sure smoke detectors are working at all times," said Turner. "We see a lot of fires that happen between midnight and six in the morning. That's why it's really important to have those in place - to be able to notify the residents to get out before we get here."
Firefighters contained the fire to the first floor of the house. The Red Cross is assisting the seven people who were displaced by the fire.
