(KUTV) - The use of police force during a shootout in a Riverton apartment complex has been ruled justified by District Attorney Sim Gill.

On January 20th, Unified Police say 33-year-old Justin Gary Llewelyn was approached by police who were following fresh footprints while tracking possible vehicle burglaries in the snow to track a then-unknown suspect.

According to Gill's office, Sergeant Wilson with UPD came across Llewelyn in his search and ordered him to stop.

Llewellyn allegedly opened fire and the officer fired several rounds back as Llewelyn ran through the apartment complex shooting at the officer.

Llewelyn was wanted for a series of crimes, including one where a Utah County Deputy was injured while pursuing Llewelyn in his cruiser.

Having reviewed the case the district attorney's office found the officer's actions justified.
