LDS Church President Russell M. Nelson on Instagram, possibly oldest user on app
(KUTV) -- In case you've missed it, the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a new Instagram account - and he could possibly be the oldest user on the social media app.
LDS Church President Russell M. Nelson, along with his counselors in the First Presidency and all members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, can now be found on Instagram.
The Church leaders use Instagram to help "reach and minister to people all over the world," stated a November press release. Allowing them to share the message of the LDS Church, Nelson, his counselors and the Quorum now have a better reach to the younger community since adults between 18 and 31 make up a large demographic of Instagram users.
“We have been tremendously blessed in recent years to reach people around the globe with messages that promote faith in Jesus Christ in ways that simply were not possible when I was a young man — or even a young father,” stated Elder D. Todd Christofferson, chair of the Church’s Communications Services Committee. He also stated:
These advancements in communication are a blessing. We expect to continue to utilize digital channels — such as Instagram — that best help us in our desire to share the Savior’s message of hope, love and peace.
From further research, 2News has found that Nelson might also gain another accolade: oldest Instagram star.
Currently, the apparent oldest Instagram star is Helen Ruth Elam Van Winkle, better known as Baddiewinkle or Baddie Winkle. Winkle, 90, became an internet sensation in 2015 when she wore her granddaughter's clothes in an image uploaded to Twitter. Her social media tagline - Stealing Your Man Since 1928 - has become a popular phrase among those heavily influenced by the digital age. Today, she has an Instagram following of 3.8 million followers.
The Marvel Comics mogul Stan Lee also had a significant following on Instagram before his death in November - his account has 8.7 million followers post-mortem.
However, Nelson is 94, making him the contender to most likely take Winkle's spot as the oldest Instagram star.
With only having the account up for just under two months, Nelson has already garnered over 189,000 followers, so he could be on his way to become another internet sensation.
2News has reached out to the Church for further comment and inquiry about this possible social media feat.
