LDS Church releases latest volume of The Joseph Smith Papers
(KUTV) -- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has released the latest volume of The Joseph Smith Papers.
Revelations and Translations, Volume 4: Book of Abraham and Related Manuscripts depict the development of the Book of Abraham, which is found in the Church's scripture known as The Pearl of Great Price, a press release stated.
This book details what happened from the time Smith purchased the Egyptian documents in 1835 to the time the text was accompanied by illustrations in the church newspaper Times and Season in 1842.
“This latest volume offers readers an unprecedented look at the manuscripts and earliest publications of the Book of Abraham,” Robin Scott Jensen, one of the volume’s co-editors, said in a press release. “But it also takes readers inside Joseph Smith’s study of the Egyptian papyri before he dictated the Book of Abraham—which is a history with which few Latter-day Saints are familiar.”
The book contains three main groups of documents:
- The first are the Egyptian papyri that were purchased by Smith in 1835.
- The second are the documents that constitute the "Egyptian-language documents" Smith and his associates tried to decipher.
- The third are the manuscripts and the first publication of the Book of Abraham.
