Man pleads guilty in DUI death of 13-year-old boy riding bike in West Jordan

Mason Andrew Ohms of Saratoga Springs agreed to a plea deal on Monday in the death of 13-year-old West Jordan boy Eli Mitchell.

Ohms, 50, is accused of spending an afternoon drinking at a West Jordan bar, and, moments after leaving the parking lot, hitting and killing the West Jordan Middle School student.

Mitchell was riding his bike home from the grocery store where he stopped to buy a few treats in April.

Ohms is accused of hitting Mitchell, who was in a crosswalk on 90th South in West Jordan, and leaving the scene of the crash.

Witnesses near the West Jordan Home Depot reported trying to stop Ohms, who was eventually arrested at his home in Utah County.

This is not a first offense for Ohms, who has a host of prior DUI offenses — he was convicted of DUI in 1996, 1997 and 2003. He was convicted of alcohol restriction violations in 2010.

He pleaded guilty to the 2nd degree felony of Criminal Homicide; Automobile Homicide punishable with up to 15 years in prison.

Ohms pleaded guilty to a 2nd offense, 3rd degree felony, leaving the scene of a deadly accident punishable with up to five years in prison.

A trial was set for this month in 3rd District Court.

A sentencing date has not been set — Ohms could serve up to 20 years in prison.
