March and candlelight vigil for 16-month-old girl assaulted, recovering in hospital
(KUTV) -- A march and vigil is taking place Monday evening at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City, Utah, in support of a 16-month-old girl who was attacked earlier this week.
The march is planned to start at 8 p.m. and hosted by TAPU Podcast, Watchtower Cafe, and Utah Pacific Islander Civic Engagement Coalition.
Participants are asked to gather starting at 7:30 p.m., near the 1300 South entrance, for the march to go around the park and end at 500 East.
A candlelit vigil follows the march to provide a space for "healing, love and support," a news release stated.
Police say the child was found inside an apartment in the Avenues along with Daniel Farr, 36, who committed suicide.
Investigators say Farr was watching the girl and a sibling for their mother. The mother returned to the apartment and discovered Farr’s body and her injured child.
Farr had a history of domestic abuse charges, according to court records.
“The nature of these injuries we can’t really talk about right now, that’s part of the investigation,” said Det. Greg Wilking with the Salt Lake City Police Department in a previous interview with 2News.
Farr was engaged to the child’s mother. Neither the biological mother or father were involved in the attack, the release said.
Salt Lake City Police Department is actively investigating the case. The following statement was released on Friday by the girl’s family:
We would first like to thank all of those who have shown love and support to our family at this time. The outpouring of love has been overwhelming. Please know that our baby girl is recovering and will continue to be in the best care possible. We did not ask for financial support however we are so very grateful for friends and family and the strangers that have embraced us as family that care so much to have done this for us. Your donations will go a long way on this very long road we will travel with this precious girl. We ask that at this time the family be shown privacy and respect so that we may grieve our tragedy and heal our souls as our girl heals her body. We understand that rape and sexual abuse in its entirety such an evil thing that casts ripples far and wide. We all know someone who has been violated in this manner and it does deserve conversion and awareness. Keep us in your thoughts and prayers. And we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
