(KUTV) — A babysitter who was caught on camera kicking and covering the mouths of 5-month-old twins earlier this year was sentenced on Thursday.
McKenna Newell will serve 30 days in jail and spend 36 months on probation after pleading guilty to one count of child abuse.
Judge L. Douglas Hogan sentenced Newell to a prison term "not to exceed" five years, but ordered the sentence suspended. Hogan also suspended a $5,000 fine.
Newell will be required to complete 500 hours of community service, as well as complying with requirements of the Utah Child Abuse registry, among other terms.
The 21-year-old admitted to the abuse after the twins' father reported her to police in January. He told police a nanny cam had caught Newell kicking, hitting and covering the noses and mouths of his twin baby girls.
A $75,000 warrant was issued for Newell's arrest, but she turned herself in to West Jordan police.
She must report to the Salt Lake County Jail by Oct. 11 to serve her 30-day sentence.
