(KUTV) — A spoofed phone number is part of a scam with fraudsters acting the part of a Utah credit union.

Vernal City Police Department warned of the scam where an impersonator calls from a number that shows up on caller ID as legitimate number from Mountain American Credit Union, but the caller asks for personal information the credit union said would not be requested by any employee by phone.

According to police, callers claim to be from the financial institution and ask for the last six digits of a social security number to verify "unsubstantiated activity" on an account. The number that shows up on caller ID is from the fraud division of the credit union, but didn't originate from it.

"This is clearly a SCAM," Vernal PD said on its Facebook page.

Citizens are urged to take precautions to protect personal information.

Anyone who feels they have been a victim is asked to contact the local Mountain American branch.
