(KUTV) - Police have asked residents in Riverton and Herriman to lock their doors and stay inside while officers search for a shooting suspect who exchanged gunfire with officers.

According to Unified Police, the male suspect shot another man and stole his car around 6 a.m. in Riverton near 4900 W 13500 South.

When officers found the suspect, he shot at them. Police returned fire, but a Unified Police tweet said neither the suspect nor the officers were hit by the gunfire.

The suspect fled in the Nissan Murano that was stolen from the original shooting victim.

Police later located that vehicle near Ashland Ridge and Emmeline Drive. It is unknown if the suspect ran away or stole another car and fled the area.

Unified Police have asked residents in the area to lock their doors and report any suspicious activity to 911.

Police said they were concentrating their search area between Mountain View Corridor and Rose Crest Road (5600 West) and between 13400 South and Blackridge Reservoir.

Police received reports of shots being fired in various parts of Riverton and Herriman Saturday morning, but officers were unable to find evidence to support those calls.

The suspect is described as a male with dark clothing and facial hair. Police describe him as armed and dangerous.

The victim who was shot is reported to be in critical condition at a local hospital.

Police are asking anyone with surveillance systems in the area to review back to 6 a.m. Saturday morning and to contact Unified Police at 801-743-7000.
