Police: Man tried to 'get the devil out of his wife' by wiping blood on her

Police arrested a Layton man for assault after he allegedly held his wife in a room and wiped blood on her.

According to a probable cause statement, officers responded to a domestic incident Thursday morning where a man had reportedly kept his wife in a room for 15 minutes, during which time he was attempting to "get the devil out of his wife."

The man, identified as James Daniel Orcutt, 54, "cut the inside of his right palm and the back of his left hand," arresting documents state. He then wiped his blood on his wife's face and pants.

The arresting officer reported smelling alcohol, and Orcutt submitted to a portable breath test, according to the affidavit. The test returned a 0.176 blood alcohol level.

Orcutt was arrested on suspicion of unlawful detention and unlawful detention of a minor, a class B misdemeanor; and assault, a class A misdemeanor.
