Police warn of identity theft risks after mail thief caught on camera
(KUTV) — It was Saturday when Tori Hutchins decided to scroll through the video from her Ring doorbell camera — and what she discovered upset her.
The video showed a woman walking up to Hutchins' porch and taking mail out of her tenant's mailbox, then walking away.
Now that tenant, Zack Hodson, is waiting to see what, if any, damage his identity and credit may take if indeed, the woman uses his information.
According to the Federal Trade Commission, last year in the United States, 400,000 people had their identities stolen right out of their mailboxes.
Thieves often open bank accounts, apply for credit cards and get loans.
Police say there are ways to protect yourself, including purchasing a locking mailbox, not leaving letters on your box for the post office to pick up, and making sure you check your credit regularly.
