Rep. Stewart creates Anti-Socialism Caucus
(KUTV) — Rep. Chris Stewart is declaring war on socialism with the creation of the Anti-Socialism Caucus.
"The Anti-Socialism Caucus will play a part in how we will defeat socialism once again," Stewart said in a release.
"Socialism is a folly. Not only is it doomed to fail wherever it rears its head, it leaves a wake of destruction in lives and freedoms lost," Stewart said in a release. It says the purpose of the caucus is to inform lawmakers and the public on the dangers of socialism and to "serve as a bulwark to stop the advancement of socialist policies and legislation."
Stewart says enough time has passed from the fall of the Iron Curtain that today's sympathy among young people in the United states is "alarming." It says polling shows 53 percent of American millennials favor a socialist society to a capitalist one. Among those over 55, only a quarter favor it. The polling source is not cited.
The release quotes from an article in The Economist, that is behind a paywall after the introduction.
"Our adversaries have one thing in common: they want to destroy freedom, democracy and the rule of law, for the life-affirming principles which define our liberal democracy represent an existential threat to their existence," the release states.
