(KUTV) Three suspects were arrested in Sandy after one suspect shot a firearm into the air.

Police responded to a report of shots fired in the area of 630 E. 8870 S., and located the vehicle that matched the complainant's description.

After the suspects were taken into custody, police noticed that two firearms inside the vehicle in plain view.

Enrique Valdez was the driver, Weston Jace Hansen was the front passenger, and a third suspect was in the back seat.

Officers also found open containers of beer in the front passenger area of the vehicle, police say.

Hansen later admitted one of the firearms belonged to his mother. He explained that Valdez picked him up from his house earlier that morning, and at some point Valdez stole the handgun from his mother.

Police say Hansen also admitted to drinking a couple of beers and to throwing a marijuana pipe into the back seat when they were stopped by police. He also admitted to witnessing Valdez shooting the gun.

Valdez said he took the handgun from Hansen and shot it several times into the air. After Valdez fired the gun, Hansen took the gun back and hit him several times, police say.

Hansen is currently on felony probation with AP&P and is a category I restricted person.

Valdez is not a U.S. citizen, and admitted to obtaining the gun by trading a couple of ounces of marijuana for it.
