Two middle school students in Park City were investigated for joking about "shooting up the school."

According to the Summit County Sheriff's Office, the two students at Ecker Hill Middle School made the remarks "jokingly" and did not have any weapons available to them.

"We are not allowing the two students to attend school today," the sheriff's office said in a Facebook post Wednesday, "and have encouraged the school to contact them with next steps."

Sheriff's investigators planned to refer the matter to the Summit County Attorney’s Office for any further action in Juvenile Court.

Word of the threat began spreading on social media late Tuesday, the sheriff's office said, prompting the investigation.

"We ask parents of students to contact our office immediately when hearing information like this," the sheriff's office said. "It wasn’t until after it was shared on social media that our deputies were notified. If you hear or see something, please say something - to us."
