University of Utah names Mark Harlan as new athletic director
(KUTV) — The new University of Utah athletic director will be Mark Harlan, coming from the University of South Florida, the school announced Friday.
Harlan will start on July 1, following the retirement of U of U AD Chris Hill.
“After an extensive national search during which we spoke with a number of outstanding candidates, Mark emerged as our clear top choice,” university president Ruth V. Watkins said in a release. "Mark has a breadth of experience in athletics and in fundraising, an open and collaborative leadership style and a track record of success that will enable him to lead our athletics department to greater heights."
“I am humbled to follow in the footsteps of Chris Hill and to build on the strong foundation already in place,” Harlan said. “I cannot wait to get started.”
According to the release from the U of U, before he was AD at the University of South Florida in 2014, Harlan held a variety of positions, including tenures as the senior associate athletic director for external relations at the University of California Los Angeles; senior vice president for central development at the University of Arizona; senior associate athletic director at San Jose State University; and associate athletic director at the University of Northern Colorado. Harlan earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Arizona.
"I am thrilled to hear of Mark Harlan’s selection as the University of Utah’s next athletic director, and excited to welcome him back to the Pac-12,” said Larry Scott, Pac-12 commissioner.
