(KUTV) — Toasted Barrel Brewery donated $1,300 to Washington Elementary School in Salt Lake City to pay off the school lunch debt.
The donation was made Thursday to the school principal. Funds were raised by the brewery that had asked its patrons to contribute to the cause during the month of December.
Washington Elementary School is located at 400 North and 200 West. An estimated 347 students attend the school from pre-kindergarten to sixth grade, with a student-teacher ratio of 18 to 1.
According to state test scores, 32% of students are at least proficient in math and 22% in reading.
The brewery posted on social media that it was grateful for the support of the community that allowed the business to make the donation. The post social media post stated:
Thanks for supporting our local community!! We hope to continue to be a business that gives back and makes this community awesome. Thanks so much for your donations.
Toasted Barrel Brewery is located at 412 West 600 North.
The school publicly thanked the neighboring business with a Facebook post that stated:
We are very grateful for the community support from Sage and Andrea of Toasted Barrel! During the month of December the Toasted Barrel asked patrons to donate to help pay off student lunch debt at Washington. They were able to raise $1,300! Thank you!
Washington Elementary is a Title I school. This means it qualifies for federal funding because its population has at least 40% of students from low-income families who qualify under the United States Census's definition of low-income, according to the U.S. Department of Education.
