MOAB, Utah (KUTV) — Two women who were killed at a campsite near Moab told friends that a “creepy guy” was making them uncomfortable in the days prior to their deaths, family members tell 2News.
Investigators say Kylen Schulte, 24, and Crystal Turner, 38, were both shot and killed in the La Sal mountains and police are trying to figure out who killed them and why.
Bridget Calvert, an aunt of Schulte, spoke with 2News Friday afternoon and said the family is hoping the killer is captured quickly.
There’s been this creepy guy at our site, we’re definitely moving campsites.
“I’d really like to see progress where it doesn’t just feel like we are screaming ‘there’s a killer out there, please help!’ He, she, or they could be across the country. It’s frustrating. It’s scary,” Calvert said.
The Grand County Sheriff’s Office has indicated that the women were both shot multiple times and investigators are following up on leads in the case. Sheriff Steven White told 2News on Thursday that police did not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community.
“How can you publish something and say the community is not at danger when here is a killer at large, please tell me how that works?” Calvert said.
Schulte and Turner were married and were living in Moab. The couple lived in their van and enjoyed camping, according to Calvert.
The couple went on a camping trip last Friday and indicated they were having some issues at the campsite on the La Sal Loop Road.
“Friday evening, they were with friends and told them there was a creepy guy at their campsite, just ‘this guy creeped us out, might have to move.’ Saturday, they told their friends ‘there’s been this creepy guy at our site, we’re definitely moving campsites today,’” Calvert said.
The couple’s bodies were discovered by a friend who went looking for them on Wednesday after they didn’t come home from their camping trip.
I’d really like to see progress where it doesn’t just feel like we are screaming ‘there’s a killer out there, please help!
“They might have taken their lives physically, but they are not going to put their love light out. The love between those girls will shine forever. They had an amazing endless love and it’s undying,” Calvert said.
The Grand County Sheriff’s Office did not release additional information about the case on Friday. Anyone with information about who killed Schulte and Turner is asked to contact the Grand County Sheriff’s Office at 435-259-8115.
Schulte’s family has established a GoFundMe fundraising website to help with funeral expenses.
