(KUTV) Utah Senators have given preliminary approval of a medical marijuana proposal that would legalize edible, vapor and topical pot products.

Senators voted 15-13 Monday to advance the bill.

Republican Sen. Mark Madsen of Eagle Mountain sponsors the measure and says it will help those with certain chronic conditions who have not found relief through other medications. Madsen was visibly emotional from the Senate floor.

The vote took place the same day The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints softened its stance on Madsen's proposal. The church had announced two weeks ago that it opposed the plan.

If approved by the Senate, the measure must still be passed by Utah's House of Representatives.
