(KUTV) - Utah’s first-ever Goodwill Outlet store opened its doors Thursday. The store offers a different kind of shopping experience, allowing for major discounts.

The clothes, shoes, books and other merchandise are all placed in large bins for shoppers to sift through. These are the items that did not sell at other Goodwill stores around town and are marked down significantly.

Instead of paying for an individual item, shoppers pay by the pound. Clothing starts at $1.59 per pound.

“It is such a different buying experience,” Jason Asher, director of retail product said, “You want to have patience. You’re going to want to be courteous to other shoppers and you’re going to have to dig in.”

The merchandise is not sorted but is dumped in large blue bins that are rotated throughout the sales floor several times a day.

Asher said Goodwill recognized a need for affordable shopping options in the community.

“Whether someone has hit hard times, refugee communities coming in, looking to get that fresh start, there are amazing buys that can be found,” he said.

The Goodwill Outlet Store is located at 1850 W. 1500 South and is open Tuesdays through Saturdays.
