LAYTON, Utah (KUTV) — Crews on Wednesday morning worked to repair a broken fire hydrant that was shooting water above rooftops near Highway 89.
The eruption was caught on video, which showed the water spraying into the trees on the north side of the highway near Valley View Drive.
Steve Garside, Layton City public information officer, said a semi truck hit the hydrant just before 8 a.m.
He said hydrants are equipped with valves that prevent the pressurized water from exploding outward in the event they're damaged. However, the semi-truck hit the hydrant in a specific way, breaking the valve in the process.
The resulting gush caused at least 10 nearby homes and one business to lose water, Garside said, adding that repairs could take up to five hours.
An Oak Hills Construction crew that was working nearby jumped into action when they saw the hydrant explode, he said. They helped block off the area and clear the scene.
It wasn't immediately known which company's semi-truck hit the hydrant.
