A Utah man is dead after going under the water at the West Valley City Family Fitness Center pool and never coming back up, according to West Valley City police.

The wife of 35-year-old Corey Holmgren was watching him swim laps at the pool when he went underwater in the middle of the pool.

Lifeguards jumped in to attempt to save Holmgren , and pulled him out of the water unresponsive.

Emergency crews attempted to resuscitate Holmgren , but were unsuccessful.

Holmgren was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Holmgren , who is a U.S. veteran, was an experienced swimmer who was trying to expand his lung capacity using different lung techniques.

It's unclear what techniques Holmgren was using when he went under.

Holmgren death is considered a drowning, but it's unclear why he went underneath the surface in the middle of the pool.

And earlier version of this story referred to the victim as Corey Holmgrem, which was provided to 2News by police. The name has been corrected Corey Holmgren.
