Smokey Bear sign stolen, recovered in North Carolina
A Smokey Bear sign that was taken from a mountain fire department last week has been found, fire officials say.
The 6-foot-tall bear sign that was posted near the Broad River Fire and Rescue Department to let folks know the fire danger was found near Shope Creek Trail Head in the Riceville community.
Firefighters said the bear and fire-danger sign attached to it cost about $1,500. Community members pitched in and a reward fund of nearly $1,000 was set up for its return.
So far, no one has been charged in connection with the theft.
